Discrete Element Method Simulation and Field Evaluation of a Vibrating Root-Tuber Shovel in Cohesive and Frictional Soils

Soil-cutting forces are key indicators of root-tuber harvesters and other soil-engaging tools’ performance. To improve operational efficiency, minimise soil disturbance, reduce fuel consumption, the draught vertical involved in root tuber crop harvesting must be minimised. Two field experiments assessed harvester’s performance at a depth 200 mm, varying frequencies, travel speeds on clay sandy loam soils. Discrete element models (DEM) were developed subsequently used to replicate evaluate S-shaped fork-shaped shovels. Linear regression ANOVA (p < 0.05) analyse data. Draught force concurrently increased with speed both textures but decreased vibration frequency. The by approximately 41% 21% when harvester was operated between 5 Hz 14.5 10 12.5 Hz, respectively.
